Nerja is located east of the city of Malaga and passing by the municipalities of Rincon de la Victoria, Velez-Malaga and Torre del Mar.
“The coastal municipality of Nerja is located on the eastern Costa del Sol; in fact it is the last village in the province before entering the province of Granada. It is considered by many as one of the most beautiful places in the province for a day at the beach. Nerja is a municipality that attracts both national and foreign tourism, where the latter forms a third of the population of the town.”
The beaches are outstanding for their environment, as in the coastal area in Nerja is not just a sand area, shore and sea, but the territory is divided between natural beaches and quiet rocky coves and cliffs, a vision unparalleled in the Costa del Sol. Some of the most famous and popular beaches are: Burriana Beach, the beach of Alberquillas, the small cliff of Caletilla, Calahonda beach with rock formations and the stunning beach of Maro, among many other invaluable beaches.
The Nerja Caves attract the attention of tourists, and no wonder. Inside, there are plenty of cavernous galleries dotted with towering stalagmites and stalactites. The caves were discovered in the late fifties and investigations are still on-going; within its galleries closed to the public, have been recovered remains of human origins with paintings dating back over 42,000 years.
As an anecdote, Nerja was in the early eighties the filming location for the popular television series Verano Azul; such was the acceptance and love that Nerja still keeps signs from the epoch of Verano Azul, for example the ship of El Dorado, better known as the boat of Chanquete.
Finally, the coastal town retains its charm of a former village, a quiet place, away from the crowds formed in cities as the city of Malaga. Many people don´t limit to beaches and decide to tour the town, which we strongly recommend; along the narrow streets of white facades, its different plazas and parks or along the promenade leading to the extraordinary views from the Balcon de Europa.
The more curious or religious visitors take time to see the hermitage of San Miguel or the church of El Salvador; many are impressed by the grandeur of the aqueduct of Aguila, while other tourists are drawn to discover other nearby towns such as Maro, Torrox-Costa, Velez and Frigiliana. Do not forget that Nerja holds inland other beautiful places not mentioned here which are awaiting you.
