Its beaches form a natural extension of the town and are particularly busy during high season. Fuengirola remains one of the most popular holiday destinations on the Costa del Sol, attracting both Spanish and international family tourism.
Discovering Fuengirola
Founded by the Phoenicians, Fuengirola has been shaped by Romans, Visigoths, Moors and Christians, all of whom have left a rich cultural legacy. After centuries of pirate attacks, it developed into a modest fishing village before growing into the vibrant tourist destination we know today on the Costa del Sol.

The Promenade (Paseo Maritimo)
Fuengirolas seafront promenade is one of the longest in Spain, stretching approximately 8 kilometres along the coastline. You will find numerous bio-healthy exercise machines, childrens playgrounds, beach bars (chiringuitos), restaurants, terraces, nightclubs, hotels and shops all along the way.
Strolling beside the sea is a delight at any time – whether at sunset, sunrise or in the evening. We recommend enjoying the refreshing sea breeze all year round.
River Park (Parque Fluvial)
On the western side of the promenade lies the attractive Parque Fluvial, a relatively new riverside park offering a variety of outdoor activities. You can hire hydro-pedals, enjoy a zip line across the river, or simply relax in this navigable canal area at the mouth of the Fuengirola River, very close to Sohail Castle.
It is perfect for families or a relaxing day out, with ping-pong tables, football and basketball courts, a childrens playground (including a popular dinosaur-themed area), and a skatepark. Cyclists can enjoy dedicated cycle lanes, while those seeking peace can stroll along the paths, enjoy the viewpoints or rest in shaded areas.
At the end of your visit, the nearby Miramar Shopping Centre is ideal for a spot of retail therapy or a meal.
Sohail Castle (Castillo Sohail)
Crossing the Puente de la Armada, you reach the small hill by the sea where the impressive Sohail Castle stands. This ancient Arab fortress dates back to the 10th-11th century and offers stunning views over the Mediterranean.
During the summer months (typically April to September), the castle and its surroundings host the popular Marenostrum Fuengirola concert series. In 2026 the eleventh edition runs from 24 April to 12 September with around 36 concerts featuring national and international artists such as El Ultimo de la Fila, Fito & Fitipaldis, Pablo Alboran, Dani Martin, Aitana, Romeo Santos, Sting and Alejandro Sanz, among many others.
Special festivals include Fulanita Fest in May and the Sun & Thunder Festival (27-29 August 2026) for rock and metal fans. You will also find open-air theatre, flea markets and cultural events. The Arabs named the town Sohail, and legend has it that the castle was the only place from which the bright Sohail star (Canopus) could be seen, guiding nomads in the desert.

Plaza de la Constitucion
In the heart of Fuengirolas old town, with its charming maze of narrow streets, lies the bustling Plaza de la Constitucion. This lively square is a focal point for year-round events and the perfect spot to sit, relax and watch the world go by.
Enjoy the views of the beautiful Baroque-style parish church or take shelter under the shade of the magnificent centenary ficus tree – especially refreshing in summer. Beneath the square you will find a paid car park, and the surrounding area is full of shops, restaurants and cafes, just steps from the beach.
The Marina
If you are exploring the town and fancy heading to the coast, do not miss Fuengirolas marina. Here you can enjoy various sea-related leisure activities, including dolphin and marine-life watching trips, diving courses, sailing lessons and more.
There is plenty of parking and a good choice of restaurants if you want to spend the day there. Historic boats occasionally dock in the port, including replicas such as the Nao Victoria – the ship that completed the first circumnavigation of the world under Magellan and Elcano.
Bioparc Fuengirola Zoo
Fuengirola is also well known for its award-winning Bioparc, a modern zoo that follows the innovative zoo immersion concept. It recreates natural tropical forest ecosystems, allowing visitors to feel close to the animals in beautiful, immersive habitats representing Madagascar, Equatorial Africa, Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific islands.
The park has extended opening hours in summer, including evening sessions and special shows. It is an excellent family attraction focused on conservation and education.
Other Places to Visit in Fuengirola
In addition to the main attractions, Fuengirola has interesting Roman archaeological remains at Finca del Secretario in the Los Boliches district. Nearby, the fairground hosts one of the largest and most colourful weekly markets in Andalucia every Tuesday morning – highly recommended for its lively atmosphere and variety of goods (clothes, shoes, food, crafts and more). There is also a smaller Sunday market at the marina and a second-hand flea market on Saturdays.
