The municipality of Fuengirola is one of the smallest in the province with a high building and population density; this population easily doubles in summer. The beaches are an extension of the town and have especially in high season a very high occupancy rate. This is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the Costa del Sol, attracting both national and international family tourism.

Discovering Fuengirola

Founded by the Phoenicians, Fuengirola has also been settled by Romans, Visigoths, Muslims and Catholics. All have contributed to leave the rich legacy that makes up the municipality today. After the constant pirate attacks in the past, it ended up consolidating as a small fishing village; over time it would grow to become the town we know today, an important tourist destination on the Costa del Sol.

Promenade

Fuengirola promenade is one of the longest in Spain. Along these 8 kilometres along the coastline you can find numerous bio-healthy machines and playgrounds for children. Of course there is also the typical infrastructure of beach bars, restaurants, terraces, nightclubs, hotels and shops.

Strolling by the sea is a pleasure at night, sunset or sunrise; we encourage you to do it all year round and enjoy the healthy sea breeze.

On the west side of the promenade is the newly created Parque Fluvial which offers various outdoor activities such as hydro pedals for hire and a zip line across the river. It is a navigable canal located at the mouth of the river in Fuengirola and very close to the Sohail Castle.

It is an ideal location for families or to spend the day relaxing in any of the many activities . From ping-pong tables to football and basketball courts, as well as a playground for children.

Those who go by bicycle can ride along the cycle lane designed for this purpose. If you want to enjoy relaxing and peaceful activities, you can take a stroll and enjoy the viewpoints or the rest areas.

At the end of your visit, you may want to go to the Miramar Shopping Centre, very close to this place.

Sohail Castle

Crossing the Puente de la Armada we approach the small hill by the sea on which stands an ancient Arab fortress, the Sohail Castle. During the summer months concerts and cultural events take place inside the fortress or in the surroundings.

The Arabs called the town Sohail and it is said that only from this castle you could see what was then called the Sohail star, which guided the nomads in the desert. (Canopus star, the second brightest star in the firmament).

Numerous events take place inside the castle and the surroundings. From flea markets and physical activities to open-air concerts with popular national and international artists. There are concerts  usually between March and September; if you would like to attend to one, just let us know and we will arrange the transport.

In the centre of the old town of Fuengirola with its maze of streets is located Plaza de la Constitucion, a focal point of the city where take place a large number of activities throughout the year and which also invites you to sit and enjoy watching the comings and goings of passers-by, the views of the Baroque style parish church or the centenary Ficus with its huge shade (very refreshing in summer).

Underneath the square there is a paid car park; the square is surrounded by shops, restaurants and is very close to the beach.

Marina

If you’re strolling around the city and feel like getting to the coast, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Fuengirola Marina. You will find different leisure services related to the sea, such as sighting of marine species, diving or sailing courses and more.

There is parking and restaurants in the area, in case you feel like spending the day. There are also boats that occasionally dock in the port and allow you to visit the interior;such as the reproduction of the Nao Victoria, which was the ship used by Magellan to circumnavigate the world for the first time.

Bioparc Zoo

Fuengirola also known for its Zoo, Bioparc, which promotes the concept of zoo-immersion, recreating small tropical forest ecosystems. It has special opening hours during the summer with evening shows.

This zoo represents habitats such as the Madagascar Islands, Equatorial Africa, Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific islands.

Other places to visit in Fuengirola

In Fuengirola there are also some archaeological sites from the Roman period; you can visit them in Finca del Secretario in the district of Los Boliches.

Nearby it is also located the fairground where on Saturday takes place a colourful flea market we can recommend.
