Discover Almayate

Almayate has a rich and extensive history as a stable population. In its vicinity are the Phoenician archaeological settlements of Los Toscanos farm and the Jardín necropolis, as well as the quarries (map) from which the materials necessary for the construction of the Málaga Cathedral were extracted. During the Nasrid period, Almayate was a main farming area. After the conquest by the Catholic Monarchs, it was granted a privilege for settling near the coast.

Almayate’s fortunes varied in the early 20th century, culminating in the Civil War of 1936 – 1939. The original Phoenician and Moorish settlements disappeared, but in the 19th century Almayate Bajo was founded. The onset of tourism brought changes to the area.

Torre Alta de la manganeta

The Torre Manganeta, also known as Torre en la boca del río Vélez, Torre de Manganeto or Torre de Toscanos is a watchtower or beacon tower. It is located on the right bank of the mouth of the Vélez river and dates back to the 16th century.

In the 16th century, the Mediterranean coast was threatened by attacks from Berber pirates who would land on the coast and plunder cities and rural settlements. King Charles I of Spain thought of a defensive system based on the construction of watchtowers that would allow control of the entire perimeter of the Mediterranean coast.

Peñon del Toro

The Peñón del Toro, also known as Peñón del Toro, is a natural elevation of the terrain that stands at 92m above sea level and constitutes a natural viewpoint of the entire Vélez Málaga coastline. Osborne bull

The Osborne bull (Spanish: El Toro de Osborne) is a black silhouetted image of a bull in semi-profile. Erected as either 14-meter-tall (46 ft) or seven-meter-tall (23 ft) billboards, as of July 2022 there are 92 of them installed on hilltops and along roadways throughout much of Spain.

It began as an advertisement in 1956 when the Osborne Group set out to promote ‘Veteran’ brandy. An Andalucian artist by the name of Manolo Prieto suggested the bull and thus set a legend

Phoenician Necropolis of Jardín

The Phoenicians were a seafaring people who established colonies and trading posts throughout the Mediterranean. They were known for their maritime skills, their production of purple dye, and their extensive trade networks. One of their most important settlements was in the area that is now southern Spain.

On a property known as El Jardín in Almayate, which is situated roughly 400 meters from Los Toscanos, one can find remnants of Phoenician tombs. The Jardín Necropolis was active from the 6th to the 4th century BC and is located away from the population (400 meters from Los Toscanos), following the Phoenician custom .

The Phoenicians established small settlements along the entire Andalusian coast, particularly near the mouths of rivers. This may have been due to their passion for sailing and fishing.

Festivals in Almayate

Almayate has several popular festivals throughout the year. One of them is the Romería del Sagrado Corazón, celebrated by the Brotherhood of the Sacred Heart on the first Sunday of May every year. This pilgrimage has become one of the most popular in the province. Additionally, Almayate celebrates its traditional festival on the last weekend of June, coinciding with the celebration of San Pedro.

Fair

Almayate celebrates its traditional fair annually on the first weekend of July. The fair is filled with activities and performances, including tributes to popular artists and performances by local musicians. The fair starts on Friday with a parade and music from a local band. Then, the official lighting is turned on. In the fairground tent, there will be a parade and election of the Queen, Maids of Honor and Mister of the Fair. In the same tent, there will be musical performances.

On Saturday, starting in the afternoon, there will be exhibitions and races. In the tent, starting at night, there will be performances by local musicians.

On Sunday, starting at noon, there will be music and dancing. At one in the afternoon there will be a parade and election of Miss and Mister Seniors. At two o’clock there will be a popular paella. The fair will end with a performance by a local group.
