Gibraltar, also known as The Rock<\/strong>, is a British Overseas Territory perched at the southern tip of Andalusia, just a few metres from La Linea de la Concepcion. It combines red telephone boxes, fish and chips and sterling with a thoroughly Mediterranean landscape and climate. Its history is as distinctive as its geography.<\/p>\n

In 1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession, an Anglo-Dutch fleet captured the Rock in the name of the Archduke Charles. Nine years later the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713 formally ceded Gibraltar to the British Crown \u201cin perpetuity\u201d. Spain has never relinquished its claim to sovereignty, yet the Rock has remained under the British flag ever since. That historical dispute, together with its strategic position at the entrance to the Mediterranean, explains why Gibraltar remains a unique enclave: British by treaty, Andalusian by neighbourhood and Mediterranean by nature.<\/p>\n

Until July 2026 crossing the border meant identity checks, queues and the feeling of moving from one country to another. That changed on 15 July 2026, when the UK\u2013EU Treaty on Gibraltar entered provisional application. The physical fence and routine border controls on the land frontier were removed. Today you can walk or drive across freely. The Gibraltar Border in 2026: What Has Really Changed<\/h2>\n

The most visible change is the disappearance of the fence and routine passport checks between La Linea and Gibraltar. Since the early hours of 15 July 2026 thousands of people have crossed without showing documents. It is the first time in more than a century that the physical border has ceased to be a daily obstacle.<\/p>\n

Although there are no systematic checks, always carry a valid passport or national identity card<\/strong>. Spot checks or security controls can still take place. Time spent in Gibraltar also counts towards the Schengen 90 days in any 180-day period if you are not an exempt resident.<\/p>\n
