Just 101 km from Malaga Airport, 25 km from the spectacular town of Ronda, and only about 1 hour 10–20 minutes from Marbella and Estepona, this tiny village of just over 200 inhabitants went from being a peaceful white village to the famous “Smurf Village” in 2011 when Sony painted the entire place blue for the film premiere. The success was so great that they decided to keep the blue colour, and today it is promoted as the Blue Village. Want to find out what to do in Juzcar and why everyone who visits wants to return? Keep reading.

You won’t find luxury nightclubs or parties until dawn here, unlike in Marbella or Sotogrande. In Juzcar, families, nature lovers and those seeking magical photos prefer to wander among blue houses, breathe pure chestnut-scented air and feel as though they’ve stepped into a fairy tale. It’s the perfect destination if you’re staying on the Costa del Sol (Marbella, Estepona…) and fancy a different, original and utterly charming day out.

What to Do in Juzcar

Wondering what to do in Juzcar? Though it’s a small village, in half a day or a full day you can enjoy unforgettable experiences. Here are the best activities to make the most of your visit.

The Graffiti and Blue Houses Route

The star of Juzcar is its intense blue colour. Stroll leisurely through its narrow cobbled streets and discover more than 14 murals and graffiti featuring Smurf characters: Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Grumpy, Gargamel… Many have QR codes that tell you the story of the village. It’s like a treasure hunt!

The famous blue houses of Juzcar.

Don’t miss the Smurf sculptures scattered around the village, the blue Santa Catalina church, and the magical cemetery. The entire village is one huge stage for unforgettable photos.

Hiking in the Genal Valley

Juzcar is surrounded by one of the most beautiful chestnut forests in Andalusia. The most popular routes are:

Ruta del Moclon – easy with panoramic views

Ruta de los Molinos – ideal for families, with old water mills

Ruta de los Riscos – more challenging but spectacular

In autumn the forest turns golden and becomes a paradise for mushroom picking. In spring it smells of flowers, and in summer it offers cool shade. Perfect for escaping the beach and the bustle of the Costa del Sol!

Stunning landscapes on the hiking routes around Juzcar.

Adventure and multi-adventure for the whole family

Looking for a bit of adrenaline? Juzcar has two spectacular zip lines crossing the valley: Salto del Villano (200 metres) and Salto del Gran Zul (150 metres), plus a multi-adventure circuit with a climbing wall. They also run children’s face-painting workshops with Smurf designs and themed activities for kids.

Important note: The zip lines are usually open mainly at weekends and on public holidays (approximate hours 11:00–14:00 and afternoons). We recommend checking current availability before your visit via the Town Hall or local social media to avoid disappointment.

Local gastronomy and charming bars

After all that walking, nothing beats a good tapa. Try:

Bar Torricheli – incredible views and homemade portions (map)

Bar ParribaPabajo – family atmosphere and home-grown produce (map)

Don’t leave without trying the local wine (there’s a winery in the old tin factory) and chestnut dishes in season.

Viewpoints with cinematic views

The Mirador de La Torrichela (with Papa Smurf statue) and the Mirador del Jardon are must-visits. From there you’ll see the whole blue village surrounded by mountains and the green valley. Sunset photos are magical!

What to See in Juzcar

In addition to the above, don’t miss:

The Santa Catalina Church (blue inside and out)

The Town Hall and main square (map)

Juzcar Park with its giant village map

The old Tin Factory (now a winery)

Everything is just a few minutes’ walk away. The village is so small it’s impossible to get lost.

What Makes Juzcar Special?

Juzcar is special because it combines three things that don’t always go together: childish magic, wild nature and absolute tranquillity. It’s the perfect counterpoint to the Costa del Sol: no crowds, a slow pace and lovely people. Ideal for anyone looking for unique Instagram photos, a family day out or simply breathing pure air surrounded by centuries-old chestnut trees.

Plus, its location is excellent: only 25–30 minutes from Ronda, and just over an hour’s drive from Marbella and Estepona. In under two hours you can go from a Costa del Sol beach to the blue forest of the Genal Valley. It’s also very close to other beautiful white villages such as Pujerra or Cartajima. Who wouldn’t want that on a Malaga holiday?

We’re certain that anyone who visits Juzcar… comes back.

How to Get to Juzcar

Getting to Juzcar from Malaga Airport or from Marbella and Estepona is very straightforward. Here are the three main options so you can choose according to what suits you best: comfort, flexibility or price.

1. Private transfer with Malaga Transfer – The most comfortable and recommended option

If you want to arrive relaxed, without looking at maps or timetables and with all your luggage taken care of, our private transfer is the best choice. We pick you up directly from Malaga Airport, your hotel in Marbella, Estepona or wherever you’re staying, and take you door to door in comfortable vehicles with a professional driver.

Approximate duration: 1 hour 30 minutes from the airport (a little less from Marbella or Estepona). No stress, no changes, air-conditioned all the way.

We’ll take you comfortably whenever you like.

We offer private transfers to Juzcar, combined excursions (Juzcar + Ronda is one of the most popular) and return transfers to the airport or your hotel.

2. In your own car

From Malaga Airport it takes approximately 1 hour 29 minutes (101 km). The simplest route is:

Leave the airport and take the MA-20 towards Algeciras/Ronda.

Join the A-357 towards Ronda (exit towards Campillos/Ronda).

In Ronda take the MA-515 towards Cartajima/Juzcar.

Follow the signs until you reach the village (free parking at the entrance).

From Marbella it takes about 55–60 minutes and from Estepona approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. The road is very scenic and well worth it.

3. By bus (the cheapest option)

There is no direct bus to Juzcar. The usual combination is:

Bus from the airport or Malaga station to Ronda (approx. 2 h 30 min – 2 h 45 min).

Then local bus from Ronda to Juzcar (about 40–50 minutes).

Total time is usually between 4 and 5 hours depending on connections and waiting times. It’s the cheapest option, but the least comfortable (especially with luggage or small children).

Want to combine Juzcar with other white villages, Ronda or a beach day? Let us know and we’ll prepare the perfect itinerary with private transfer.

Book your transfer in advance to secure the best price and availability, especially in high season.

Juzcar, the charming Blue Village in the Serrania de Ronda, lies in the heart of the Genal Valley in the province of Malaga.
