Discover Tarifa: History and Heritage<\/h2>\n
Tarifa has a fascinating history closely linked to its strategic position on the Strait of Gibraltar. The name comes from Tarif ibn Malik, the Berber commander who made the first Muslim landing on the Iberian Peninsula in 710. Although Roman and Phoenician remains have been found, the present-day old town and its defensive system date largely from the Islamic period.<\/p>\n
In 1292 Sancho IV the Brave conquered the town. Just two years later, in 1294, Alonso Perez de Guzman \u2013 better known as Guzman el Bueno \u2013 heroically defended the fortress during a siege by the Marinids. When the attackers threatened to kill his son if he did not surrender, Guzman threw his own knife down from the walls, preferring to sacrifice his son rather than hand over the town. This act earned him lasting fame in Spanish history.<\/p>\n
During the Peninsular War, French troops besieged Tarifa from late 1811 until January 1812. The Anglo-Spanish garrison, supported from Gibraltar, successfully held the town. Today Tarifa\u2019s historic heritage invites visitors to wander through narrow whitewashed streets, along the old town walls and past numerous monuments.<\/p>\n
Castle of Guzman el Bueno (Tarifa Castle)<\/h3>\n
The Castle of Guzman el Bueno, also known as the Castle of Tarifa or Castle of the Guzmanes, is the town\u2019s most important historic building. Although Roman structures have been discovered inside its walls, the present fortress was commissioned by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III in 960. It features the typical Caliphate construction technique of alternating layers of brick and stone known as \u201csoga y tizon\u201d. The castle has been enlarged and restored many times over the centuries.<\/p>\n

After extensive restoration work the castle is open to the public and houses an interpretation centre. Visitors can explore the courtyards, towers and ramparts and enjoy outstanding views over the harbour, the Strait of Gibraltar and the African coast. The octagonal albarrana tower (Tower of Guzman el Bueno) is traditionally associated with the famous act of defiance.<\/p>\n

It stands at the junction of Avenida Andalucia and Calle Batalla del Salado and formed part of the great medieval town wall.<\/p>\n After the Christian conquest the walls were extended and this gate was established as a new entrance. It is one of the few remaining gates from the original fortifications, flanked by two crenellated towers and featuring a sequence of three arches. From here the maze of whitewashed streets, craft shops and tapas bars begins.<\/p>\n View the Puerta de Jerez on Google Maps<\/a><\/p>\n The Torre del Miramar (Miramar Tower) is an imposing structure of Almoravid or Almohad origin standing about 20 metres high. It belongs to the Aljaranda section of the town walls. From the tower and the surrounding Plaza Miramar there are spectacular views of La Caleta beach, Tarifa harbour, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and, on clear days, the African coast.<\/p>\n Recently restored, the tower is an important part of the historic defensive system and an excellent viewpoint from which to appreciate Tarifa\u2019s strategic location.<\/p>\nPuerta de Jerez<\/h3>\n
