The Sanctuary Virgen de la Peña is sheltered by a cave, a shrine of considerable antiquity; a religious site honouring the apparition of the Virgin of La Peña, and surprising by the beauty of scenery where it is kept. Mijas has more hermitages such as El Puerto, located in an elevated area of the municipality.
There are two churches which are outstanding: The Church of the Immaculate Conception, a religious building which was built in the 15th century and the beautiful Church of San Sebastian from the 17th century.
It is essential to know the Wall which in the past protected the village, apart from its gardens which were remodelled to provide more beauty. Strolling around this area you will get to the lookout. Lots of tourists take a rest at this viewpoint, where in addition to relax, they get carried away by the breath-taking view that is displayed before their eyes. A mixture of sensations produced by the mountains surrounding the town of Mijas, some houses along the road to the coast, the urban population of Fuengirola in the distance, always bathed by the Mediterranean Sea; this view is complemented by extensive green areas.
